Join us Tuesday, December 18 when local artist Laura Breitman amazes us with her lecture/ demonstration “Photorealistic Fabric Collage Method.” Prepare to be blown away as she produces absolutely life-like “photos” of nature using nothing but cut up fabric and glue on a grid. For more information and to learn about upcoming workshops offered at her studio in Warwick, visit her website: www.laurabreitman.net
Space is still available in both of our spring workshops: Christine Fries-Ureel on Wednesday, March 19 and Sharon Pederson on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. Both classes will be held at Lake Lincolndale. Christine’s workshop will focus on learning to thread paint adorable little animals while constructing diaphanous 3-D insects and life-like trees and leaves. Sharon’s workshop features a quick and easy machine quilting method for doing Sashiko (an ancient Japanese quilt decorating technique that lends itself as well to modern quilts as to traditional ones.) Christine’s website is: www.loveabideth.com. Sharon’s is: www.sharonquilts.com.

Arc-i-Textures $50
Want to create a small (15"x15") unique quilt of your very own and learn something about composition, textures and circular
quilting? Here is a chance to use some of those fancy and unusual fabrics that you've been attracted to, but didn't
know how to use. We will tame them by fusing and learn to mix them with other textured-looking fabrics. You won't
need much of any one fabric…even scraps will do. You'll learn how to finish your quilts with facings as opposed to
bindings. Discover how to quilt and couch those "perfect" circles that have almost become a trademark of Carol's.
You'll be thrilled with the resulting small quilt which you can do in many different color schemes for use in your own
home or to give as gifts.

Machine Applique Masterclass $50
Explore an exciting range of machine appliqué techniques in this practical workshop. You will begin a small sample
piece which employs raw-edged, satin stitch, turned edge and blind hem stitch appliqué. Learn how to make perfect
satin stitch and turned under circles, how to make and apply bias cut stems and how to produce amazingly sharp points.
All this and a wealth of information on materials, equipment and personal techniques too! Patterns are provided. As her
website is not up yet, you can google her at Philippa Naylor +quilter to see samples of her work.
December 18 (Tuesday) Meeting
Laura is a local artist who creates amazingly realistic "photos" of Old Masters' paintings and scenes from nature using cloth collage. Her lecture/demonstration "Photorealistic Fabric Collage Method" will detail her use of the grid technique which was popularized by painter Chuck Close. She gives workshops at her studio only, but her demonstration for us promises to be truly fantastic.
March 18 (Tuesday) Meeting
Belgian born artist, Christine Fries-Ureel, will use slides and original quilts in her lecture "Quilting Is More Than Happiness, It's Ecstasy." She will explain the various trials which led to her most distinctive technique, a sort of 3-D machine embroidery meets threadpainting. This lecture will include how she chooses the subjects of her quilts and how mistakes can become part of the design. It will also include a live presentation of the quilts for which she has become internationally well-known. March 19 (Wednesday) Workshop
An Appealing Mini Nature Scene in a Day $50
Spend a day communing with nature as you learn how to make the 3-D fabric and/or threadpainted butterflies, leaves,
hedgehogs and trees for which Cristine Fries-Urell has become so well know. This workshop is intended for quilters of
all ability levels. Sewing machine required.
April 15 (Tuesday) Meeting
Sharon's lecture, "Stories from the Road", is one part trunk show, one part comedy routine. She has performed to universal acclaim all over California and Western Canada. While this will be her first trip to New York in decades, she is a serious quilter and author. (Reversible Quilts, More Reversible Quilts, Sensational Sashiko and Color for the Terrified Quilter are all hers.) Her philosophy is if you can do it by hand, you can do it by machine. April 16 (Wednesday) Workshop
Sensational Sashiko $50
Originating as the common man's garment decoration, sashiko has been adopted by quilters to add magnificent embellishments
to their quilt tops and garments. Using your sewing machine and heavyweight threads, learn how to achieve
these exciting designs on either a single thickness of fabric or through a quilt sandwich. This is a process workshop, not
a project one. We will make 5 small samples, 4 on a quilt sandwich and one on two layers of fabric (minus the batting).
A sewing machine with walking foot is essential. Also, if you have one, an open toed embroidery foot would be helpful
as well. Visit Sharon's website at www.sharonquilts.com to see samples of Sashiko.
May 20 (Tuesday) Meeting
Explore the batik process with Trish Hodge who lived in Indonesia for five years, traveling extensively. While studying under a batik master in Jogjakarta, Trish worked side by side with his batik artisans. Find out how you can identify the quality of handmade batiks and discover the meaning of the designs underlying this complex craft. Learn how to incorporate batik fabrics and panels into your own quilts and clothing through her lecture and trunk show: "The Batik Tradition."
